If you are now getting a bank account set up and would like to buy checks for your checking account, you need to make sure to order them appropriately because you have many different kinds to choose from.

Often you can order them directly through your bank, and because they already have all your personal information, they will make sure to include what is necessary, but there are many online options to buy checks that have different designs or formats, so if you choose that route to make your order, know what you need.

First of all, you have a few different check formats to look into. The most common type is the single wallet check which is essentially your single top rip off check that most people have. You can then opt for duplicate wallet checks, which is a format that includes a carbon layer that allows you to keep an automatic copy of every check you write out.

If the carbon is too messy for you, you can choose top stub checks, which also allows you to keep track of your payments by giving you a stub at the top of each check to fill out with the details of your check, and within top stub checks there are also different formats and designs to choose from.

Finally, you can choose a desk set check format which is great for someone who needs to keep track of a myriad of payments. It comes in a binder style format with the stubs on the left and three checks per page. Standard checking font is a MICR or secure number font, and you can choose from among many different colors and designs once you've selected a format. This could include solid colors or background images of any type, including your personal images or photographs.

The information you need to include when buying checks is also pretty standard, but there are some optional fields that you can select depending on your position. You also want to be careful about how much personal information you include since you are handing it out to the public and opening up more possibilities for identity fraud.

The standard is your name and address, but you can optionally include your phone number and email address if these are contact methods you would like people to have for you. If you have are using personal checks for contractors or suppliers, or if you are ordering business checks, this contact information could be useful.

Obviously your bank and account information will be necessary, but more than that is excessive. Things like adding your social security number are not only unnecessary but also potentially dangerous.

Buying checks is not very expensive, but it depends on the format you choose. You usually get a box of about 125-150 checks if you order single or duplicate and they can range from $12-25, depending on the background you choose. Adding your personal images will be at the upper end of the price range.

Top stub checks will be around the $15-17 range and desk set checks could be around the $30 range. Different companies will offer different discounts, but these are the average industry prices.

If you want to buy checks, do a little research on the type you are interested in. With everything there is to offer, be sure your needs are met, and you include all the pertinent, but not excessive, information. Why not have fun with your checks too; if the price is not terribly different, let your checks reflect your personality. Not all banking has to be totally serious.
